Error 404 on wikisita

Dear Friends, last time I posted a new gallery of photos (https://wikisita.com/gallery/photos-switzerland/), several of you mentionned to me that they could not see these pictures and Bernard Leroy told me that when clicking on the link I had included in the announcement to access the pictures, he was receiving the message “Error 404: page not found”. This is actually the most common error message on the Internet and unfortunately it does not provide much information about the problem which has been encoutered. I checked the gallery and the album I had created but everything looked fine on my side while Bernard was confirming that he could not see the photos. As Jack had also told me that he could see them, I have sent all of you a mail describing the easy steps to access the gallery. But it was puzzling that Bernard told me that it did not work either. And Pam was also reporting the same difficulty, although it did seem to work for others. But most frustratingly, on my side everything was working: I tested the accesses on three different computers (Windows 7 and Windows 10), on a Samsung tablet and on my iPhone and it was working fine in all cases! But Bernard was also testing with different computers and in all cases it was not working. Then, further testing with him, it appeared that if the new gallery was directly embedded in a page (https://wikisita.com/gallery/those-were-the-days/) the access was working , but if I included the gallery in an album (e.g. in the Switzerland – Geneva album), then the access problem was showing. Therefore I also created the page “Those were the days” and included the gallery in it.

However the access through the album still did not work. I was told that the problem could be with the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that each one us uses. To further investigate this matter I used another smartphone which I connected alternatively to Sunrise and to Swisscom ( I use this smartphone in France so in Switzerland I can select myself which operator is used). And indeed I could witness that all was fine with Sunrise but that I could not see the gallery when connected through Swisscom. Why are we having this problem with some telecom operators, I do not know. It must certainly be an issue with the latest version of a plug-in software used for wikisita.

Wikisita is using WorldPress for its website; but it is neccessary to also use additionnal modules provided by independant software developpers. For instance for creating and managing galleries and album, we use NextGen. And these softwares are updated from time to time. So it may be that the last version which has been installed for wikisita is generating this problem for album with some ISPS. Hopefully the problem will be solved some time in the future. But for a few days, I had the feeling as if I was again in the technical department at SITA and working on networking issues!

About

I joined SITA Paris in June 1978 as an engineer in the Technical Studies department which was then managed by Georges Giraudbit. After developping planning tools for the HLN and later the DTN, I led the design and implementation of the new routing algorithm of the DTN. Later my team delivered the strategy and specification for migrating the network from airline specific protocols to open standards, and whichalso served for the RFP for the MTN. After working on developing projects for non-airline customers, I moved to SITA Geneva in 1999, in marketing and later fiance departments. In 2004 i left SITA to join IATA in Geneva. With IATA I first worked on launching and developing a new business based on providing credit card payment services to travel agencies. Then I moved to IT, in charge of all data management for successfully.implementing SAP at IATA. Once that project was over I joined the Cargo department at IATA, in charge of Technical developments. Having worked both at SITA and IATA has been a very unique experience for me!
